'The Road to Transylvania' follows the path taken by several characters as they embark on a journey from Hastings to Transylvania. Jasmin is a little girl who lives with her guardian, Prince Osnovski, a 500 year old vampire. He is charming and funny, but always dangerous. Jasmin dreams about having a mother. What Jasmin doesnít know is that Osnovski is actually her father, which is a big potential problem because the child of a vampire and a human is destined to become a dhampir. Dhampirs hate vampires and become slayers, which puts a whole new spin on teenage rebellion. This problem, and the relationship between father and daughter, is at the core of the story, which Jasmin narrates. After an absence of 300 years, the Prince is summoned back to Transylvania by his father, the once all-powerful king of the vampires. Osnovski travels with Jasmin, two supernatural servants and Charlie, Jasmin's beloved teacher whom Osnovski sees as a mother-like figure for Jasmin. However, desiring a vampire companion for himself, he bites Charlie. She transforms slowly, from the feet upwards, and the more she changes, the less she begins to care for Jasmin. The party is followed by Duncan, Charlie's boyfriend. As he tracks the Prince across Europe he begins to understand the world he has fallen into and gradually finds fame as a vampire slayer. He also meets a beautiful companion who claims she is Jasmin's mother. In Transylvania, Osnovski finds his traditional home turned into a vampire theme park. His father is absorbed in painting portraits of his favourite victims and developing his masterpiece: a vampiric last supper. Osnovski's ex-lover, Countess Garatovski, is also present and is spearheading vampires into the 21st century. However, Osnovski fights to assert his traditional values and rule in place of his father. The Countess is determined to stop him. Indeed, she has been attempting to do this ever since Osnovski left Hastings. Both Jasmin and the Prince are trying to find out where they fit in the world. They are forced out of their comfort zone and this ultimately makes them more human. Jasmin is used to living in a vampire's household. By the end she has rejected the supernatural. Osnovski is used to pleasing himself. He learns how much he loves Jasmin, the only person he has ever loved, and what that must cost him. He is forced to make a very selfless choice in the exciting climax at the Transylvanian castle. |
